Foxtail Control

Effective Foxtail Control: A Seasonal Guide for Georgia Growers

Foxtail is a notorious invader in summer forages, particularly thriving in perennial grasses like fescue. If left unmanaged, it can significantly impact pasture quality and productivity. For farmers in Georgia, an effective foxtail control program begins early — mid to late February — with the timely application of pre-emergent herbicides.

Controlling Foxtail in Fescue by Pre-Emergence

Annual foxtail can be effectively managed with Prowl H2O herbicide by following this recommended approach:

  • First Application:
Apply 3 quarts per acre in mid-February. It’s crucial to have at least ½ inch of rainfall within 36-48 hours after application to activate the pre-emergent barrier.

  • Follow-Up Applications:
Apply 2 quarts per acre every 75-90 days throughout the growing season, for a maximum of three applications.
The closer to the 75-day mark you apply, the better — especially when rainfall is adequate.

Keep in mind these applications may exceed label recommendations, but based on agronomist advice, this protocol is necessary for effective foxtail control. Timing and rainfall are critical factors in success. This approach primarily targets annual foxtail, which is common in the region. If perennial foxtail is an issue, pre-emergents alone won’t be as effective, and a more intensive treatment program may be required, potentially costing over $100 per acre.

Controlling Foxtail in Fescue by Post-Emergence

Sometimes foxtail slips through pre-emergent controls and emerges early in the season. In these cases:

  • Product & Timing:
Use Facet L herbicide when foxtail is in the first 2 inches of growth. This usually occurs around mid-May during the first three weeks of the season, depending on weather conditions.

  • Cost & Considerations:
This post-emergent option costs about $35-$40 per acre. It’s considered more of a “spot-treat” approach and may be less cost-effective if foxtail is widespread. However, it can reduce the need for multiple pre-emergent applications.

Controlling Foxtail in Bermuda Grass by Pre-Emergence

For Bermuda grass growers, applying Rezilon in February is the best strategy to control foxtail and crabgrass:

  • Timing:
A February application ensures the pre-emergent barrier is active before weed germination begins in spring.

  • Rate & Activation:
Apply 5 oz in mid to late February, making sure there’s sufficient rainfall within 48 hours to activate the herbicide.

  • Residual Control:
Rezilon offers season-long control of annual foxtail (not perennial), reducing the need for multiple treatments compared to some other pre-emergents.
