JOHNSONGRASS CONTROL

JOHNSONGRASS CONTROL

By: Gilbert Barrett, Pres/CEO  Farmers Exchange

Johnsongrass is one of the most persistent
and aggressive weeds faced by pasture and
hay producers in North Georgia. Its rapid
growth and rhizome-based spread can
quickly crowd out desirable forages like
fescue, reducing forage quality and yields.
Fortunately, CryderTM herbicide offers an
effective solution for managing this
troublesome weed in perennial grass systems.

Cryder (active ingredient: nicosulfuron)
is labeled for use in established
perennial pastures and hayfields. When
applied at the recommended rate of .75
oz per acre, Cryder provides selective
post-emergent control of Johnsongrass
without injuring fescue. For best results,
treat when Johnsongrass is 18 to 24
inches tall and actively growing.
Applications made too early or too late
in the growth stage may reduce
effectiveness.

Application Tips:
Always add a non-ionic surfactant
(NIS) at a concentration of 0.25% v/v
to enhance herbicide uptake.
Avoid mowing or grazing for 7 days
before and after application.
Follow all label restrictions for
grazing and haying intervals,
especially if applying to mixed
grass/legume stands
.
Cryder works systemically,
translocating to the root system to
suppress regrowth. While one
application often provides season-long
control, heavy infestations or regrowth
may require a follow-up treatment.
By incorporating Cryder into your
pasture management plan, you can
suppress Johnsongrass while
preserving your valuable fescue stands,
promoting better forage production and
pasture longevity.
