Foxtail! Foxtail! Foxtail!

Foxtail is a culprit and invades forages in the summer months.  To effectively control the grassy weed in cool season perennial grasses such as fescue, a pre-emergent herbicide protocol must start in Georgia in mid to late February.

Using a pre-emergent spray application for foxtail control in fescue, annual foxtail can be effectively managed with Prowl H2O. Here’s the recommended approach:
  • First Application: Apply 3 quarts per acre in mid-February. It's critical to have at least ½ inch of rainfall within 36-48 hours after application to activate the pre-emergent barrier.
  • Follow-Up Applications: Apply 2 quarts per acre every 75-90 days. The greater the rainfall, the closer to the 75-day mark the application should be made.

These rates exceed label recommendations, but per agronomist advice, they are necessary for the best control. Timing and rainfall are key factors for success.

Keep in mind this protocol is effective for annual foxtail, which is most common in our area. However, if you're dealing with perennial foxtail, pre-emergents won’t be very effective.

A three-treatment program will cost slightly over $100 per acre.

Preventing Foxtail in Bermuda grass forage is an easier feat.  Applying Rezilon in February is the best approach for controlling foxtail and crabgrass in Bermuda grass. Here are a few key points to consider:
  • Timing: A February application ensures that the pre-emergent barrier is in place before weed germination starts in the spring.
  • Rate & Activation: Apply at 5 oz in Mid to late February and ensure sufficient rainfall within 48 hours to activate the herbicide properly.
  • Residual Control: Rezilon provides season-long control on ANNUAL Foxtail ( not perennial), reducing the need for multiple applications compared to some other pre-emergents.
